NB: This review refers to an earlier release of the Bartok, Debussy and Mozart recordings found in the above CD
The only rival account of the Sonata is from Janka and Jurg Wyttenbach and two excellent Swiss percussion players (Accord) coupled with the Solo Violin Sonata played by Hansheinz Schneeberger. As I said in reviewing the latter, it is an ''exhilarating account given with great relish and attack... though not as pianistically imaginative as stephen Bishop-Kovacevich and Martha Argerich''.
They bring a rapt sensitivity, quite exceptional colour and atmosphere to the Sonata and their companions, Willy Goudswaard and Michel de Roo are hardly less inspired. there is no alternative CD account of En blanc et noir, though even if there were it is difficult to imagine it matching let alone surpassing this mercurial and translucent performance, and much the same goes for the Mozart Andante and Variations, K501. Compact Disc, with its absence of surface noise and wide dynamic range, enchances the impact, realism and the sheer beauty of sound these artists produce. This has been one of the classics of the LP catalogue and its reappearance on CD is more than welcome.
